What to do in the days after the operation?

The entire rehabilitation period will take up to 1-1.5 months.

After receiving the case record, be sure to read the recommendations. If something is unclear, ask questions to the doctor. After that, you can safely return home. It will be a small bandage on your hand.

What you should do in the days after the operation:

  • Stitches are not put on the skin punctures. Stitches are not needed and punctures are covered with the strips (special plasters). The wounds will recover in several days. Bandages should be changed twice per week (also at home). It is necessary to send the photo of the hand via our email or Whatsapp in order to estimate the progress of wound recovery and to get needed instructions in 3, 5 and 10 days.
  • On the first day after the operation you need to return for the final examination to your surgeon. He will estimate your hand’s condition and give necessary recommendations.*

* Domiciliary examination is also possible.

Physiotherapy:

The loss of sensation and induration can appear in the operated area for the first two weeks after the strips are removed. In such cases physiotherapy is required. It is conducted after skin wounds and edema are fully recovered. Physiotherapy consists of procedure with hydrocortisone and electrophoresis. We use the gel “Fermencol” for the procedures. Standard course lasts for between 10 and 15 procedures.
Stimulation in the outpatient setting in the physiotherapeutic room is required in the case of muscle atrophy. You can go through this at your local hospital.

Exercises for hand movements stimulation*:

*needed only in advanced cases of CTS with muscle atroph.

Curative gymnastics can be performed in 2 weeks after the operation.

Perform only if you do not have edema

Exercise 1

Exercise 1

Massage the area of the operation with ointment for about 1-1,5 minutes. It is necessary to warm up your skin before exercises and make your inner scars softer and more movable.

Exercise 2

Exercise 2

Bend your wrist upwards for 10 seconds. (The second hand may help to increase tension). Repeat 3 times.

Exercise 3

Exercise 3

Spread your fingers as far as you can and bring them together so that they are forming a “beak.” Repeat 10 times. This exercise can be performed with the usage of rubber bands to increase resistance (twist it round all fingers). After this exercise your pain will decrease and the edema will go down.

Exercise 4

Exercise 4

This exercise should be done with the usage of an expander. Squeeze the expander with your fingers one by one or push the bump. Then squeeze the expander with all your fingers together. Repeat 5 times. This exercise is very important in order to return power into your hand.

Exercise 5

Exercise 5

Exercise to return mobility back to your thumb. Squeeze a clothespeg between your thumb and the index finger 3 times. Repeat with every finger. (Thumb and the middle finger, thumb and the ring finger, thumb and the little finger).

Exercise 6

Exercise 6

Exercise to return mobility back to your thumb. Stretch a rubber band with the thumb and the index finger 5 times. Repeat with every finger. (Thumb and the middle finger, thumb and the ring finger, thumb and the little finger).

It is necessary to alternate these exercises with finger flexion and extension in order to avoid muscle fatigue.
